Such a haunting song... So much loss and sadness. The trinity of the family is broken and Bjork is trying to reconcile the situation but begins to see that she can't fix it, she cannot 'Sing us out of sorrow' like she has always done. She is suddenly very human, cold and sad. But then she realises that all she can do is continue to love; her children, her self and her music. I feel like this song is the turning point on the album where the metaphorical wound of the album begins to heal. It's also the track used on the Moving Album Cover, so it's very possible that it is meant to be the major narrative change of direction on the album. |

It's overcoming the well of despair and pity that followed Bjork's Breakup. It sounds like waking up and suddenly finding clarity, like of like reaching the edge of the storm and finally seeing blue skies again. Through the Lyrics, Bjork has broken everything down to the simplest idea of connection and energy, Atoms exchanging energy and moving around. It's as if a little bit of Barny still lives on inside her and her in him. They have accepted their passing and moved on, they have 'peeled off the dead layers of loveless love' and found peace in their own new single life. Finally they can laugh together. |

The two bed companions in this narrative have grown apart, but neither of them have the courage or trust in each other to ask why. Over time the space between them has widened both literally and figuratively (damn you're good AFP). A few of us have said that if they had communicated more that they could have lived happily ever after with each other. I think that really the main issue is how much both of them have missed. They met when they were young and seemed to aimlessly sail through life with each other. What if they had of broken up in Exhibit B? What if they had of gone separate ways and found love and success in other places? Exhibit E makes me think that they turn to each other with regret because those chose comfort and safety (apathy) over facing the truth of their incompatibility and parting. |
