This may have been a Navy guy, friend or relative, that Darius knew from his hometown of Charleston, SC which is a Navy base. I've always imagined that the guy is in some sort of special ops, maybe Navy Seals. He has to go on assignments that he can't talk about or can't tell the truth about-'you hold your secrets'- 'throught the lies and all'. 'she was left behind so they could stay'- possibly the wife and kids stayed in Charleston so the kids could stay in their school (great place to raise a family by the way) while the soldier was deployed elsewhere. Many sites incorrectly have the words repeating 'through the lies and all' at the end of the chorus. He does say 'through the rise and fall' which I think is the most important and symbolic line in the song. The rise and fall of the tides meaning the good times and bad times. First time I saw this band was in a small club in SC. My first thought was 'wow, what a voice this guy has.' I think they are a very underrated band, Darius is a very underrated singer and songwriter. They got so popular that it sort of backfired on them. The name didn't help them to be taken seriously. |
