Coldplay – Ghost Story Lyrics 10 years ago
Maybe I'm just a ghost
Disappear when anybody's close
Go through you when you try to hold
Try to hold me near

Maybe I'm just a ghost
Emptier than anybody knows
Maybe I'm on the ropes
Or I'm not even here

Yeah!

Every time I try to walk through walls
More walls appear
What's the point of feeling love for you
When you don't believe I'm here?
What's the point of trying to raise your voice
If no one ever hears?
Every time I try to pull you close
You disappear

Maybe I'm a ghost
Just a whisper in a puff of smoke
A secret that nobody knows
No one will ever hear

Oh, maybe I'm a ghost
Specter on a roller coast(er)
Thorn without a rose
Something people fear

Yeah!

And every time I thought I'd walked through walls
It's all becoming clear
What's the point of feeling love for you
When you don't believe I'm here?
What's the point saying "Rescue me!"
If no one ever hears?
Every time I try to pull you close
You disappear
Every time I try to pull you close
You disappear

And every time I thought I'd walked through walls
It's all becoming clear
Every time I try to pull you close
You disappear

Every time I try to pull you close
You disappear

The Airborne Toxic Event – Strangers Lyrics 10 years ago
Great song, can't believe there haven't been any comments!

What an upbeat way to view something so sad! The singer has been denied by someone he deeply cares for, and this is his rationalization and acceptance. Running through a banal life, yet keeping his love deep within his (prison) cell, aka his mind.

If you haven't ever felt this, you are lucky. The sunlight doesn't seem as friendly and it's hard to heed the readily given advice of "toughen up and move on." But life and the world keeps moving on, as the singer points out.

The climax of the song is so beautifully expressed:

"I saw you last night
In the cell where I sleep
And your shyness was such a surprise
And you said I hold you in me
Like a secret I keep
And the truth of that moment defies all that we know"

In his dreams, she confesses her secret devotion to him in her memory, exactly matching his feelings. But the "truth" of that (dreaming) moment defies all we know, because if they both felt the same in the waking world, they wouldn't need to be strangers until all the walls fall, which in this case probably means death; his feelings are unrequited by all accounts.

This song makes an interesting lyrical/imagery pairing with Coldplay's "Ghost Story," considering the impenetrable walls, the singer's ghosts (memories), and the underlying hopelessness of the situation.

A Great Big World – Say Something Lyrics 10 years ago
As with any good lyric, the song can be interpreted many ways. Here's a simple interpretation.

This is a very personal song. Pleading. A person, who started with a lofty sense of expectation and pride, has sunk to the low of realizing that he/she is unwanted "feeling so small" by the one with whom they are hopelessly in love. The journey from the top to rock bottom has taken awhile, with many attempts to reach him/her, each falling short ("it was over my head, I know nothing at all...still learning to love, starting to crawl") Finally, reaching the bottom of (not acceptance, but) defeat, pleading for something that will never happen. Then the bluff of saying goodbye, much like a child threatens to run away from home, seeking attention.

No matter how much you want it to happen, no matter the stinging pain in your heart, the pleading is answered with......silence. Perfect ending.
