Paul Simon – You Can Call Me Al Lyrics 7 years ago
I can't say what the song meant to Paul Simon, but I can tell you what it means to me personally.

My mom's name is Bette, and my maternal grandfather was named Al, so this song was more personal to me than to most people. My parents separated when I was about a year old, and I lived with Mom, so she was sort of my bodyguard. (Please note that this is not to say my dad wasn't involved with my life, but he lived far away.)

About a year and a half ago, when my stepfather passed away, Mom moved in with me, so the roles reversed and I became her bodyguard. She died two weeks ago, and I'm still dealing with it, so this song has been very comforting for me. Thank you, Paul.

Sorry, I can't make the story better by telling you that part of my name is Al, but this is good enough.

@[thirsty_thursday:23599] Or maybe the song just speaks for itself. Certainly there are no hidden meanings here.

@[drummerpenguin:21979] "werewolves don't eat beef chow mein..."

How do you know this? If there were any werewolves in my family, I assure you they would be eating Chinese food regularly.

@[aaron1728:21978] I am sad to report that, according to Yelp and Trip Advisor, Lee Ho Fook in SoHo is no longer in business. There appears to be a Lee Ho Fook in Australia, but "Werewolves of Melbourne" just doesn't cut it.

@[shoestompe:21977] Let me see if I got this right: You're saying that "All Summer Long," which was released in 2007, got huge respect for Kid Rock from Warren Zevon, who died in 2003.

@[Volver88:19414] In this context, it's possible that Sheryl is indirectly referencing Harrison's "The Inner Light," although the lyrics of that song don't seem to connect here.

The Pretenders – My City Was Gone Lyrics 10 years ago
I think most people when they reach a certain age can relate totally to this song. The place where you grew up is going to change a lot, and even if the change isn't for the worse, you feel a sense of loss. I grew up in a relatively small town, and I can easily adapt the lyrics to my area. My dad grew up in the Bronx -- 'nuff said.

This is one of the few songs that I distinctly remember hearing for the first time. I was a senior in college and finished class for the day, so I got in my car, turned on the radio and was blown away by that bass line. Then I guessed who it was when I heard Chrissie's voice. Best of all, when the song was over, the DJ said that the Pretenders were coming to town in a few weeks. Awesome show, with The Alarm opening!

Joe Jackson – Sunday Papers Lyrics 10 years ago
I always thought the line was "mad punk f***ers, which is also a better rhyme for "suckers,". I was hoping to find an answer here, but there is no consensus, so I tried something else -- I went to youtube and found a video of Joe singing it live (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ3NDP-Qiak). In that version, it definitely sounds like "mad punk rockers." There's also a closeup of his face at that point in the song, and the movement of his lips also corresponds to those lyrics.

Of course, he could have changed it for the audience, but I'm going with "mad punk rockers."

Chic – Le Freak Lyrics 10 years ago
Nearly every lyrics website lists the lyric as "Like the days of stopping at the Savoy," but it most surely is "Stompin' at the Savoy" -- a reference to both the song of that name, as well as the Savoy Ballroom.

The Savoy Ballroom was one of the leading nightclubs in Harlem during the jazz era, along with the Roseland Ballroom and the Cotton Club, and unlike many of its competitors, was not segregated.

And I also heard the same origin story as Dulthud.
