When I listened to this as a kid I always thought it was about a toxic relationship. But hearing it again recently as an adult, I'm feeling like its a conflict between life and death. "Lucy's underground, she's got a mouth to feed" are the intrusive thoughts for death. (In the theory that Lucy can be Lucifer living underground) "Am I still alive or am I inbetween" She wonders if she is even really here at all to begin with. "Show me love, you've got your hand on the button now" She wants affection and love to remind her she is here and that life is the better choice, but no matter how close she gets to it. She can never truly have it, or, at least feel it truly for herself. -- Another idea, aside from my interpretation. I think everyone's idea is correct. Everyone has a different opinion on this song and no matter what the original idea was the words are so open for interpretation in the end its whatever it means for you. I thought it was about a horrible relationship as a young teen because that's what I was going through. I hear it now as a conflict of life and death because right now i'm having a hard time with the concept for myself. It can be whatever you need it to be for you. Even though its not it's official meaning. |

| Honestly, even though this song is about the regret of a marriage (Dave Dresden's words who helped to create this) I think in a way it could be open to interpretation. Before finding out the true meaning I always saw this as someone who is stuck in a rutt with their life; bad relationships, maybe a difficult job, or any other life stresser that they forget to love the greater things. In other words they got caught up in the whirlwind of life and needed to remind themselves about the beautiful things life can also bring. The beauty of what was and of what could be for the future. | |

Maybe this is about a relationship where the other person is just being way to indecisive about what they feel for the relationship and for their partner. Seems like it's in the view of a person who feels a lot and is giving a lot to someone who won't in return. And it is really wearing down and destroying them to a point they realize they need to take a stand. Draw the line and ask that question, if they want them or not. |
