Bruce Springsteen – Racing in the Street Lyrics 10 years ago
I believe that all of Bruce's albums connect to one story. The main character is not Bruce but rather a character that Bruce has created. To briefly explain, Born to Run is about how he is going to break out of this hell on earth that they live in. Darkness takes place after he has broken out. Racing in the Streets could be seen as the turning point of Bruce's story. He has broken out and think that life is going to be great. Well it turns out that he left one bad situation for another. Racing is a metaphor for him looking back on his life and saying, "I thought it would be better." He meets this girl and he expects to live a great life with her. But they are not living a good life. He is obviously doing some kind of work that is either dangerous or means nothing to him so she asks, "did you make it all right." But both of their dreams have been torn. They are doing what they thought and expected they were meant to do. And she is so depressed about what has come that I think she kills herself. "She just stares off alone into the night, with the eyes of one who hates being born." This makes Bruce question what he is doing and he lives wherever he is living for a new place and a new hope. "Tonight my baby and me we're gonna ride to the see and wash these sins off our hands." His baby is not the girl, it's his '69 chevy. It is all he has left. The sea, water, is a sign of rebirth. He is going to go to this new place to start a new life because even the one he broke out of for is not working for him. And he is not going to let anyone or thing stand in his way. "Out of our way mister you best keep." He's had enough

Bruce Springsteen – Backstreets Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is about three people, Bruce's character, Terry (his girlfriend), and his best friend. The whole album s about breaking out of this place that they have been stuck in. They can't live like this anymore. So the three of them make a plan to escape. They were "huddled in their cars, waiting for the bell to ring" so they could go running on the backstreets which is their direct route to a better life. However, I think that Terry and his best friend leave without him. They leave Bruce alone and escape together. The next verse (starting with Endless juke joints...) is after they left him, Bruce is pondering his life and walking through the hell on earth that he lives in now because they left him. That's why, "I hated him and hated you went you went away. Bruce, after remembering Terry for "All the movies we'd go see," he is able to move on and start thinking of another way to leave on the backstreets until the end.

Bruce Springsteen – The Rising Lyrics 10 years ago
The song jumps back and forth through different parts of time. I think there are two perspectives, one from a fireman who is a first responder and the other is from the country as a whole. The first verse is the fireman tracking through the World Trade Center. The smoke makes it so he "can't see nothing in front of me, can't see nothing coming up behind." The chorus could be from either perspective. It could be the fireman talking to someone trapped in the building who is injured or terrified saying, "take my hand, we'll get out of here." It could also be the country after 9/11 talking about how if we work together, we will rise. When he talks about the "spirits above and behind me," he's talking about all the people who have lost their lives. It's almost as if the fireman can see their spirits leaving their body and he is surrounded by them. And in the last two verses, I think the fireman dies. I think "Mary" and their "children" is symbolic for heaven. I think he is going up there with everyone else who sadly lost their lives and he can feel their arms together and feel their blood mixing with his. And while he is going up to heaven, one: he sees what the sky is filled with these sad things like "Sky of fear" and "sadness," but also, "a dream of life." That all the people he has fallen with, will now be together. And then Bruce ends it with the the chorus and the country telling everyone that we will never forget you.

Bruce is just and unbelievable songwriter
