I think the message of this song is: You may be (or think you are) superior to your peers, but you’re just as capable of falling victim to the consequences of your own stupidity as they are — and if and when you do, your perceived superiority won’t mean a thing to anyone, you’ll just be yet another person who suffered the same fate as the rest, no matter what intellectual depth you justified your actions with. Nobody is above self-destruction. |

@[jpq21:43016] I entirely agree with your interpretation except for the very last part. As you say, it’s a conversation between her current self and her younger self, but I always see the lines of the outro as split between a question and an answer, rather than a full sentence. When we’re young and insecure and anxious, it feels endless, and even when we look back at our teenage concerns, they seem so trivial now, but at the time they don’t, and I think those lines are her current self answering her younger self’s concerns: Younger self — how long must I wait? Current self — till you learn that it’s not too late Younger self — how long must I cry? Current self — till you know that you really tried Younger self — how long must I try? Current self — till you learn that dreaming’s hard Younger self — how long must I dream? Current self — till you heal your bleeding heart. She’s basically telling her former self to stop feeling sorry for herself and heal, because she won’t be able to move on until she does. |

I agree with the general gist of these interpretations, however one thing I think is worthy of noting is that she says "you're uninvited" not "you're not invited". To uninvite someone means to revoke an invitation, not to deny one altogether. I reckon the singer has instigated the feelings that the subject has for her, but whether she just enjoys the chase ("shepherd meets shepherd" might signify that she likes the idea of being in control of someone who usually is the dominant one) or whether she did invite the idea of a relationship but when it starts to get more real, this unsettles her and she changes her mind, is up for personal interpretation. I also agree the musical crescendo is as much part of the story as the lyrics in this song. |

I love this new song. Sometimes Regina sounds like a psychologist picking out a very idiosyncratic individual and that's why her songs can be so relatable and yet not quite at the same time. Like Poor Little Rich Boy. But yeah I think this song is about someone who has overcome a lot or at least like to think they have and have a tendency to feel sorry for themselves and impose it on others - like in the second verse "you've won the war but it's not your turn" like their need to dispense advice and have other people's admiration for their achievements through tough times is a bit narcissistic rather than genuinely trying to help and I think it's basically saying get over it and carry on with your life and stop congratulating yourself on overcoming your hardship. Not sure if that makes sense but it's my interpretation |

| @[gel:6725] clearly you've never had a broken heart. Nothing is naff or cliche when you're on that end of the stick. | |
