I always picture a slightly older guy who knows that he and a younger girl have a sort of connection, but they are not allowed to admit. He is realistic about things, hence he only allows her to metaphorically kiss her on the cheek before she goes to school, but he is addressing the situation with her because he needs to know for certain where he stands. He knows that life will move on for her but that he will not be allowed to see her through it, so he needs her to let him know 'what's the score' on the grand scheme of things. At least, that's how I hear it. |

I see it as the speaker just being totally underwhelmed with reality; his partner, the general mundaneness of every day life. To get him through the day, he looks at life as if it's something from a movie. He looks for something/someone to keep his mind stimulated... Every moment like a sudden pleasure Every moment that will get you by He knows it's useless to think about things as they really are, because reality is so damn plain compared to what we want it to be. The speaker is interested in the lives of others; it's another form of escapism from wallowing in his own being. I can relate to this song a lot. |
