@[nicodemusatrophy:51559] I agree about Zevon's own form of genius, but I wonder how much more he had to give. Maybe so much more, or maybe he would have faded into middle-aged bitterness. We'll never know. |

Albert Einstein making out like Charlie Sheen... he was a genius. Maybe throwaway lines, but I think it shows how much talent Zevon had to throw away on casual lyrics. But there are layers. Zevon was, I think, expressing his envy at imaginary others who may have had even more sexual success than him. |

@[nostopthat:51545] Interesting, but ultimately over thinking this. 20-year old Gary was, to some extent, just throwing interesting lines together. It's moe about feeling than a clearly defined story with beginning/middle/end. |

After nearly 45 years as a huge fan (TOTP, Are 'Friends' Eelectric?) I've only just discovered that a certain Howard Wall was the lead singer of Beggars Banquet band mates The Lurkers. I think there's a better than fair chance that Gary had Howard in the back of his mind when writing this. Presumably in those very early Earls Court days of BB, the signed bands new each other, and 20-year old Gary would have held anyone else with a record deal in awe, hence the reference. Rather like his reverence for Billy Currie and John Foxx, neither of whom were particularly successful at the time. |
