@[ofnothing:6239] Yeah, I definitely see that, I kind of wrote this interpretation really fast and after I posted it I realized that I hadn't touched on everything that I wanted to. I agree with you on her effort to diversify the lyrics. Adding buzzwords like "marijuana" and relatable-sounding statements such as "survival of the richest" are good for publicity and profit. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I interpreted this whole song very literally. Thanks for reading and adding a whole other layer of these lyrics to think over. |

Cigarettes and tiny liquor bottles, Just what you'd expect inside her new Balenciaga. {Someone's hiding something in their expensive purse, maybe saying that rich people are not as happy as they seem?} Bad romance, turned dreams into an empire. {1. Maybe name dropping without name dropping Lady Gaga who made a fortune, of course, with Bad Romance or 2. Someone taking their heartbreak and turning it into self-made success as we see in the next line} Self-made success now she rolls with Rockefellers. {Rags to riches, now in the same league as a historically rich and famous family} Survival of the richest, {Making commentary on how in America, "survival" and "success" are synonymous with "fame" and "fortune"} the city's ours until the fall. {We have control until we mess up and have to rely on higher ranking individuals} They're Monaco and Hamptons bound, but we don't feel like outsiders at all. {We are diverse, we are still Americans even though we're not millionaires} We are the new Americana, {America is changing, this generation is changing it, we are the new face of America, not past stereotypes} High on legal marijuana, {Progress that has occurred because this generation fought for it} Raised on Biggie and Nirvana, {1.These people grew up listening to diverse genres of music, metaphor for acceptance, also confirms that the "New Americana" are 90's and early 2000's kids.} We are the new Americana. Young James Dean, some say he looks just like his father, But he could never love somebody's daughter. {James Dean in the 50's was a model for greasers/hoods, probably someone a parent would not want with their daughter} Football team loved more than just the game So he vowed to be his husband at the altar. {Football players (i.e. people in the eye of the media) love other football players, homosexuality is now acceptable, more progress brought about by the "New Americana" generation} We know very well who we are, so we hold it down when summer starts. {Not sure about this one, but I'm sure it's some kind of figurative language} What kind of dough have you been spending? {Money, money, money} What kind of bubblegum have you been blowing lately? {Something about how much money you spend on everyday things?} So these are all the thoughts that I have so far, if you have any other opinions please don't hesitate to comment! |

| Panic! at the Disco – There's a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought of It Yet Lyrics | 10 years ago |

Please, leave all overcoats, canes and top hats with the doorman. From that moment you'll be out of place and underdressed. I'm wrecking this evening already and loving every minute of it. Ruining this banquet for the mildly inspiring and... (So I think that this part is describing a fancy party, probably exclusive and the narrator is throwing it. It seems that the narrator doesn't like the people at the party and wants to make a fool of them at the party.) When you're in black slacks with accentuating, off-white, pinstripes Whoa, everything goes according to plan. (Maybe, judging by how fancy they are, they have put him down in the past, now he's going to be the star of the show and get revenge. This party seems like a planned trap.) I'm the new cancer, never looked better, you can't stand it. Because you say so under your breath. You're reading lips "When did he get all confident?" (A lot of people have talked about how they think that the line about cancer is a metaphor for disease or spreading quickly, I think that it's just a word that can be interchangable with other bad things, "I'm the new cancer" "I'm the new devil" "I'm the new person that you should be afraid of" Basically, he's saying, this party is a chance for me to repay you for all of the mean things that you've done, you ask how I suddenly got so confident? Well, you never got to know me, did you? So now, I'm going to make your life a living hell.) Next is a trip to the, the ladies room in vain, and I bet you just can't keep up with, (keep up) with these fashionistas, and Tonight, tonight you are, you are a whispering campaign. I bet to them your name is "Cheap", I bet to them you look like shh... (This verse, I think that he is probably talking to a girl he was bullied by, (I'm imagining the popular cheerleader type) Like a comment that I saw said, I imagine him talking through the bathroom door to her, taunting her with, "You aren't as fashionable as you thought you were" "I bet all of the other people are gossiping about you" "At this party you aren't stylish because that seems to be all you care about, and everybody hates you") Talk to the mirror, oh, choke back tears. And keep telling yourself that "I'm a diva!" Oh and the smokes in that cigarette box on the table, They just so happen to be laced with nitroglycerin. (Still taunting, "choke back tears" "keep telling yourself that you're a diva" Then, you start to see what the "plan" was in the beginning of a song, to get the ultimate revenge. If the tables are numbered, then each person that the narrator hates can be easily poisoned.) I'm the new cancer, never looked better, you can't stand it. Because you say so under your breath. You're reading lips "When did he get all confident?" Haven't you heard that I'm the new cancer? Never looked better, and you can't stand it (You guys should worry about me, I'm so angry about all of the things that you did to me, don't underestimate me The guests may be now wondering if the narrator has gone insane and may also wonder of they are getting out of this party alive.) And I know, and I know, it just doesn't feel like a night out with no one sizing you up. I've never been so surreptitious, so of course you'll be distracted when I spike the punch. ((Sarcastically) Isn't it weird to come to a party and not gossip, not put anyone down, not be the the star of the show? Yeah, now you know how I feel Then, he basically says, you don't know that I poisoned the drinks.) |
