Jeremy is straight edge (as am I) but its extension of no drugs only goes as far as for recreational purposes. If you need painkillers, or sleeping pills as prescribed by a doctor, then you can do that. But what you said about straight edge makes sense in the context of the song, that's a good point! The line "Should I be ashamed because of what I need? Define right and wrong in regard to what’s going on." refers to Jeremy wondering if his need for sleeping pills breaks edge, or if he's still technically abiding by the rules because he isn't doing it for recreational use. It seems as if these lines: I feel relief in just watching you breathe. It’s hypnotizing like an inner peace. I get fixated on your deepest breaths Waiting for the angels to take their effect Refer to Jeremy rolling over one sleepless night after having taken his sleeping pills, or "blue angels" as the song calls them, rolling over and finding comfort and solace in watching his partner sleep - or "finding relief in watching them breathe." This act comforts him until he's drifted away to sleep by his "blue angels." |
