I don't think it's a mercy killing in the literal sense, like one might do for someone who is gravely ill and suffering. He is also too emotional to make it a "jealousy/rage/non-one else can have you" type of atl. My interpretation is that this is one verse short of a murder/suicide scenario. He suffers from mental illness/depression, his life may be in shambles and he can't see a way out. "I close my eyes and bang I am dead I know he knows that he's killing me for mercy" He doesn't want to leave her behind, alone and unprotected. She could be his mate or child. "He holds my body in his arms He didn't mean to do no harm And he cries and cries" This to me solidifies that he is not the "jealous, abusive" egotistical type that kills his mate so no-one else can have her. In his mind, he truly believes he is doing what is best. "He did it all to spare me from the awful things in life that comes And he cries and cries" This part makes me feel that likely, he killed his child. Just my 2 cts worth... :) Love the song! |

@[dulberry1:3533] I think you're spot on. When I first heard him sing the "guns and gods" verse, the "bibles and guns" phrase immediately popped into my mind. Dave is as deep as an ocean. Nothing is ever truly simple in his music. Many people don't get that.and think this is a happy little song about red birds. LOL |
