| Keane – Nothing In My Way Lyrics | 10 years ago |

I've read what some other people are saying, but I still think that a broken relationship is being described in this song. This is one of my favourite Keane songs; it's a beautiful, meaningful song, and that's why I decided to decipher it. This is what I got from it: A turning tide/lovers at a great divide- this first line describes the great change that has happened as two people's relationship has ended. Why do you laugh/when I know that you hurt inside- this line describes the narrator's perception of his ex partner, his complete trust that since he hurts so much inside, his partner must hurt too. He totally believes that it is deception on his partner's part, and she really is hurting inside, even though she laughs on the outside. The first line of chorus: And why d'you say/it's just another day, nothing in my way- This highlights his partner's perceived deception; in his view, his ex partner seems to wake up with a positive outlook, and she's pointing out that she has 'nothing in my way' now her partner is gone, but really she's just hiding the pain that she has inside. I don't wanna go/I don't wanna stay- Now, this is a harder line to decipher, but what I think it means is that she's saying that she liked being in a relationship so it was a shame to go, but she doesn't want to stay either because the relationship was bad for her. So there's nothing left to say- This is the woman telling her partner that they've talked it over and now she wants to draw a line under their relationship and have a clean break. And why d'you lie/when you wanna die/when you hurt inside- this is a fairly obvious line that shows again how the narrator perceives his ex partner's deception. I think that this line mirrors his own feelings- he is the one who 'wants to die' and 'hurts inside', and so he thinks that his partner must be feeling this too. Don't know what you lie for anyway/now there's nothing left to say- this line refers to his partner's earlier declaration that there is 'nothing left to say,' and the narrator is pointing out that why is she even bothering to talk to him and lie that she's absolutely fine, when she is the one that is saying that there's 'nothing left to say' referring to their relationship? A tell tale sign/you don't know where to draw the line- This is the narrator saying that a 'tell tale sign' that his ex partner is lying that she's feeling fine is that she's going overboard on the comments that she's fine, so far that 'she doesn't know where to draw the line' on her constant attacks to hurt him by making out that their relationship meant nothing to her. The last few lines are very intriguing, because I believe that they are the turning point in the song. The slightly bitter lines 'Well for a lonely soul, you're having such a nice time' indicates to me that the narrator is saying to himself hang on a minute, maybe she is actually not as hurt from breakup; maybe she's actually telling the truth. This is the narrator saying to himself that he thought that his ex partner was lying and she feels the same way as him and is hurting badly from the breakup, but maybe she is really 'having such a nice time' and he is the one hurting from the relationship. And the echoing lines 'Just another day/nothing in my way/I don't wanna go/I don't wanna stay' for me is him going over what his ex partner said and wondering if it is true. The last few lines put a really interesting, melancholy twist in the song that leaves a sad feeling that the narrator realises that he is the only one that's hurting; he's the only one that feels alone. That's what the song means to me, and I hope that my perception of it hopes you to decipher the song. |
