To me, it seems like the song is about someone who enlisted for glory, and saw horrible things, and bad did things because it is what he was supposed to do for his country but then he returns home to basically feel like he was forgotten about or left behind. The part about the bridge is him redacting the desire to kill himself, the covetous kiss being the will to live, and his family tipping their glass is him hoping people appreciate that he didn't go through with it.

The meaning of this song is pretty obvious. The speaker lost a loved one, probably a sibling, and both him and his mother are grieving.
