| @[seeing:8293] Not necessarily global warming at all, I don't think. Just kinda about how we aren't taking of the things around us nor ourselves. | |

This is my first time listening to this song but lemme take a quick stab at it. From what I gathered, it seems like the song is about her not being 100% content / excited for who she is. Sometimes she wishes she was someone else but shortly realizes that's probably not as fun, interesting, or simply the way she's not supposed to feel. You're only as fun and interesting as you want to be. |

| Brand New – Mene Lyrics | 10 years ago |

What a shock. Brand New hittin' hard with Biblical refereneces already. This time, most obviously, regarding the title. So I'll address that. I think the meaning of the song bears there. As Zelane1043 has correctly said, "Mene Mene" is "an indiot implying that a (usually) negative event is easily predictable based on the current situation. Often, the event is seen as hard to avert. A direness similar to an 'impending doom' can be implied." "Mene Mene" can also be used as the phrase "the writing on the wall". It means the same thing. But it "Mene Mene" has Biblical roots. It comes from an event from the book of Daniel in the Old Testament. I haven't read this book in a while, so forgive me if I get stuff wrong, for I'll be explaining through my memory. Daniel was one of seven kids taken captive by the Babylonians, but he never let himself be influenced by the Chaldean / Neo-Babylonian ways. Since, you know, he was a believer of the Hebrew God and whatnot. Eventually, he became an important figure God used to His will and partly by obtaining the gift of dream / vision interpretation. He worked as such for kings and thus became an important player in the Babylonian court system. So, anyway, King Belshazzar was throwin' a good ol' fashioned Babylonian party one day, right? Lots of booze, lots of hoes. Lots of gold and silver goblets. Everyone was praising all sorts of gods. Then suddenly, King Belshazzar becomes terrified. He turns pale and immediately grows weak. Because he sees a human hand writing on the wall. It left a message that he could not understand. Rightfully freaked out, King Belshazzar spreads the word. "I'ma reward anybody who can tell me wtf this means! I'll give you some bling and some swag! I'll even give you power!" But no matter who he called in, no one could make out what the message said or what it meant. This only made him more anxious and scared. Then Daniel showed up. He basically does the gig for free, and lets the king know he's not interested in the reward. Good man. But the message, however, isn't so good. The message meant that he (King Belshazzar) was going to die very soon, and that his kingdom will be divided. Later that night, King Belshazzar was killed and another man was made king. Brand New's new song "Mene" seems to be implying that our time is coming to an end. An inevitable end. An inevitable end we're responsible for. But we can delay it if we behave better and be the people we were meant to be. This will probably become a major theme in the new record. |
