Heart-wrenching stuff I get the 1940-s Anne Frank link, but my interpretation is of an ex-siamese twin, recalling the moment where he was separated from his brother, and how he misses that presence and intimacy, recalling the moment of loss and how undignified it was. Where does JM get these influences from?? |

So much to unpack.... 1st verse is about a virgin meeting their idol, a pop star or teenage crush, becoming infatuated, and ending up in bed with them, losing their virginity and realising that this 'sex' thing that they had heard about, was not what they hoped for. Since losing their virginity, life will never be the same. 2nd verse is about going through life in general, wanting to feel something more, but ultimately, disappointed, and observing how everyone else still makes a big deal out of love and lust. 3rd verse is about porn, and just how fake it is, and how desenitised he has become over the whole experience, to the point that he can't be bothered with a cheap one-night-stand I usually get images of someone sitting at a tarot card reading, especially with the first line "And the first one tore a picture of a dead and hanging man". You have the 'Hanged Man' Tarot card, but I like the other comment about Jesus (fisher of men) as well. Maybe even a preacher (I've got no clue about the fishes....it's just great allitteration) but It still fits with the whole 'Idol Worship' connotation that I get, but I can just imagine a teenage girl meeting, say, for example, Justin Bieber or having a private audience with a padre who she is devoted to, and losing her virginity to him, then leaving the hotel room in a completely different state. - The singer looks out of the window to see, basically, hell. Everything's on fire, and everyone's wailing. Nothing's really changed that much, but the innocence is lost, the illusions of romance are shattered. Nothing will be the same again, and he'll go through life seeing everything on 'fire'. To me, the fires & burning (and theres a lot of fire in this song) is about lust. Burning men are just horny guys. Beginning of verse 2, I visualise a street in a city....maybe Amsterdam because of the flowers and window displays. Girls on display like meat on hooks, amongst a lot of 'burning men'. The flower stands makes it more palatable and normal. - The city is no place for our narrator. He travels far and wide, makes wishes, but doesn't see the beauty in nature, just opportunities to top himself. Everyone is in a state of limbo, and he wants escape. Drugs won't do it because he still has some hope of redemption, and drugs might be even worse than sex. Verse 3 is the easiest. - Some great analogies of the sex faces of porn stars, and how each position is not about fulfilling eachother's needs, but just how to get the best angle for the camera for the voyeur. - This is the 'boner killer' that is stopping him from having a one night stand. He wants love, not sex. - The last few lines might seem the most obvious (I'm going to lock you in and set the house on fire), but bearing in mind the connotation of fire=libido, he could easily be saying to his tryst...'Leave me alone. I'd sooner just have a wank and go home'. I know there is a lot of open interpretation to these lyrics, and that's what makes them so great. They're always a good debate point, and each person will have something new and unique to bring to the discussion. - The broadest interpretation is that this guy is just unhappy with the lie of sex=love, and how it's in the media that people will meet their soulmate, fall in love and live happily ever after. |

Love this tune. It's less punky than SA's usual stuff, but it's got a mean edge to it. There's an element of gender play here, and sexuality is somewhere at the heart of it all, but it's more about establishing control, both psychological and sexual. |

This is the complete antithesis of every song sung by guys bragging about their sexual prowess & objectifying women to boobs and booties. The song itself is almost a period piece of 30's vaudeville, with a stylish dapper protagonist. As to whether it is a 'gay' song or not, it doesn't matter. FM was gay, and there is a certain campness to the song, but that's what makes it so good. I just picture the protagonist as a well-dressed sophisticated man-about-town in a pinstripe suit, cane and spats, wooing and having dalliances and generally just enjoying life. His sexuality is not an issue, nor does he make it one. He's just being himself. And the Brian May solo does wonders to complement the song - refined, cheeky and smooth as butter! |
