I would like to offer my interpretation of a couple of imagery concepts that have been kicked aournd here. First, given her minimal descriptor tendancy, I believe the phrase 'looking more than a little human' is meant to say 'looking like something the cat dragged in'. So, I believe she is trying to point out that the character object of the song has perhaps been out in the elements for a while and so is somewhat vulnerable and needy. Secondly, the term 'iron bed' is meant to describe something that is both hard and soft. The object is to know that he is being invited to a soft warm place from which he will just as abruptly be asked to leave and, as the song goes on to describe, with brilliant secrets and blessings that cannot be seen or described, but only found in the dark abyss of one's soul. Her true gift to him was not just the brief shelter and warmth of her bed and body, but to enable him to find comfort alone in his own darkness. |
