| General Public – Tenderness Lyrics | 10 years ago |

THESE LYRICS. SO GAY. Now, I don't like General Public, but this song is good. At first glance, this song seems like your average straight song, were the boy wants to take things further with the girl, but doesn't know how to say it because he's a Man, goddamn it. The eternal straight struggle. But if you actually look at the lyrics, you don't even have to look that closely or take of your convenient heteronormative glasses, you realise this is a LIE. Let me take you trough these lyrics: So there's this guy, and another person, there's fooling around but it's nothing really serious, there's pining. But what's interesting is that suddenly, the singer shifts from singing about himself and his frustration, and adresses the person he's singing to more directly. Whistling in the graveyard calling up your girlfriend just trying to make her understand you're squeezing the telephone like it was her hand no question so many questions she's going to catch you out boy it all seems so underhand now she's the only thing that ever made you feel like a man, man madman madman So, this person he adresses has a girlfriend. "She's going to catch you out, boy". BOY. BOY. "She's the only thing that ever made you feel like a man, man". MAN. Man. This song is sung by a man, to another man. You can't twist that fact. Now the song gets another dimension, and suddenly it makes SENSE. This is about a casual sex kind of relationship between two men, and the reason they can't go ANY further than that is the other man's (internalised) homophobia and, y'know, societal norms which caused that in the first place. The other guy doesn't even want to admit his relationship with the singer to himself, and is anxious his girlfriend will find out about this, (So many questions, she's going to catch you out boy) not only because she's going to know he has been cheating on her, but also because he's going to get outed, which is a legit fear, as it could ruin your life. The line "She's the only thing that ever made you feel like a man" is the most telling. Homophobia is also a fear about not being a real man or woman. The singer's love interest doesn't want to lose his girlfriend because she is the only thing keeping him from losing his virility, which is also immediately connected to his straightness. The love interest makes up for his perceived emasculation (Hate that word) with being rough. The singer wants his tenderness, a proper relationship, but is scared of pushing it, knowing the other guy is going to get defensive or angry if he shows his true feelings, because, to him, they never hade a chance. |

| Hozier – Take Me to Church Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
I'm not here to fight, but, looking at these comments, I'm wondering: Why are straight people so defensive about this song and their right to apply it to themselves, saying "It's not about homosexuality, it's about love"? Despite what you all say, Hozier included, there are some experiences that are exclusive to gay people. Discrimination, isolation, a complete disregard for other people's opinions - this is something most gay and bi people can relate to, and some of these elements can be found in this song. The line "I was born sick, but I love it" is very telling - homosexuality has always been linked to illness. This is just an example, other people have pointed out this and other things. Let gay people have this song, let us connect it to our unique experiences. |

| Björn Afzelius – Ikaros Lyrics | 10 years ago |

This song is arguably one of Björn Azfelius' best, so it's a shame it hasn't got a translation. The theme of the song is universal and more people ought to know what's it about. This is a rather literal and sloppy translation I put together just now, but if anyone's interested I'll write a more thorough one. Keep in mind that I'm not a native english speaker. When I reminisce about my childhood The horror pictures stand out the most Yes, the times they scared or beat me Are the memories hardest stuck For as a child you take love for granted; Everything else is against your nature The moment you take a step out in life You're just a devoted animal Yet soon are the adults there and pointing In the direction they think you should take All of the dreams that they were denied They want to actualize through their children If you're obedient you're rewarded and revered If you revolt you lose everything No one loves a child that doesn't succeed No one loves a child that's strong But who has the ability to know All of the things a new individual is comprised of And who can tell another what happiness looks like Who can say what someone wants to become? Let your flowers grow where there's soil Let your plants live where they'll thrive Don't lock your plants inside a greenhouse Spare them an unnatural life Let the people you love try their wings One day your love will fly right If you want to be respected by your child Show your child respect |

Very lush (does that make sense?), very melancholy, very GAY. Love it. The music video also captures the feeling of the song so well. |
