Matt can say all he wants about this song being about a 'protagonist' but there is no way this isn't about him and Kate splitting up. Firstly, and I realize this isn't my strongest argument, the woman in the lyric video looks like her. It isn't her, but it looks like her. 'On the outside you're ablaze and alive / But you're dead inside' is all just about how he was trying to be with the woman he loved but it didn't feel like she loved him anymore. 'I gave you everything / I can't give you any more' is him letting go of this relationship because it just wasn't working. I don't know, that's just how I hear it. I think Matt probably said it was about some sort of storyline to stop Kate from getting pissed off with him. |

| The bit where he goes "I can't fear death, no longer/ I've died a thousand times" in my opinion, is all about depression, and how it feels to live without really living. Then there's the bit that goes "How are we on a scale of 1 to 10? / Can you tell me what you see? / Do you want to talk about it? / How does that make you feel?" and I think that's all about him getting help, and the completely pointless questions they ask you in counselling etc. and him explaining that all you really need when you're in that situation is for someone to hold you close and not let go. | |
