My thoughts when I heard the song were of a family the could have just lost their child and how it effected the mother. I know this is most likely not the meaning but it's still just a thought.~ I don't like walking around this old and empty house- The wife explains how the house is not the same without their child. So hold my hand, I'll walk with you my dear- The husband explaining to her that he is there for her not matter how hard it seems. The stairs creak as I sleep, It's keeping me awake- The wife feels that the house is empty without their child there. It's the house telling you to close your eyes- The husband tries to comfort telling her she needs to get rest. And some days I can't even trust myself- As time goes by the wife slowly starts to drink more and have more depressing thoughts It's killing me to see you this way- The husband hates to see his wife in so much pain 'Cause though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore- As the wife slowly starts to except the fact that her kid is dead, she starts to do more drugs as in it being the "ship" that takes her body away from the terrible reality she has to face There's an old voice in my head that's holding me back- The voice being her grief making her feel more miserable making her become more of an alcoholic Well tell her that I miss our little talks- The husband explaining that he is tired of seeing his wife this way and misses when he could have little talks with her Soon it will all be over, and buried with our past- The wife trying to tell herself that it will all be a thing in the past sooner or later, but she still feels terrible We used to play outside when we were young and full of life and full of love- The husband reminding his wife of when they were younger with all the energy and love they had Some days I don't know if I am wrong or right- The wife explaining how she can't she clearly anymore Your mind is playing tricks on you my dear- The husband saying that it is all in her head and to come out of the miserable place she is in Hey! Don't listen to a word I say- The husband telling his wife how she no longer listens to him no matter how much he tries to help her Hey! The screams all sound the same- The wife saying that all her grief and misery and pain (aka screams) are begging to sound the same, as in she no longer sees the point in trying Hey! You're gone, gone, gone away, I watched you disappear All that's left is a ghost of you- The husband saying how he watched his wife become more hopeless/helpless untill the point were were she was just a "ghost" in the background Now we're torn, torn, torn apart, there's nothing we can do, Just let me go, we'll meet again soon- Once again the husband explaining how the drugs/depression/misery had torn their relationship apart and sending her off to rehab may be the best choice Now wait, wait, wait for me, please hang around- The wife telling her husband that he is all she has and if she goes off to rehab she will have nothing I'll see you when I fall asleep- The husband telling her she will be fine and they'll get to see each other in their sleep |

My interpretation of the song is about mankind and how destructive we are. "At home with the ghosts in the national parks" My guess is that the ghosts are referring to trees, as in when we cut them down their "ghosts" still linger in the park. "Mankind's behave like some serial killers Giant old monsters afraid of the sharks" This is obviously about how we go and destroy forest, tear things down, ect. As for the monster part I think he is refering to us as humans being these huge monsters being able to do nearly anything yet we are still scared of the sharks. "And we say we're in love with all of it And we say we're in love with everything And we say what can we say? And we say we're in love with all of it And we say we're in love with everything And we say what can we say?" This talks about (or at least I think it does) on how humanity acts as if everything is fine, we go about our day doing what we are told acting as if we love it all. "And we say we're in love with all of it And we say we're in love with everything And we lie, we love to lie" Probably one of my favorite parts of the song. The very last lyric is on how we say we're on love with everything, on how it's all perfect, yet in reality it's just a lie. |
