I believe this is about Marina being with someone, but she can't fully cut him out of her life because she still loves him. But I'm thinking it is also about the realisation that she still misses her ex-boyfriend(s) and this is why she feels she is lacking something in her relationship - because she compares it to what it was like with her previous ex boyfriends - we're never happy and always want more. The references to 'weeds' and 'weed' possibly mean two separate things and she's used them in a clever way. Weeds - no matter how many times she's tried to get rid of them, they just keep coming back Weed - as in the drug which can be addictive, just like her previous ex(s) are. "Could have filled a garden With all the flowers that you gave me But none of them were ours You know the problem with history It keeps coming back like weed" - Her boyfriend buys her many flowers but they're not 'ours' meaning her and her ex's. She says 'ours' because she thinks of her and her ex as one possibly. And her history with this ex/or ex's has caused the problem in her current relationship. "And when nothing feels enough At least you taught me how to love How to love, love But he keeps growing back like weed" - She wants more from the relationship and it's lacking something, but she's trying to look on the bright side of things as she's grateful for being taught how to truly be in love - but HE (the ex) still keeps coming back into her mind. "Baby, just open your eyes to see He's growing from inside me And I just don't know what I can do I thought I cut him at the root" - 'Baby' referring to her boyfriend. She's trying to explain how it doesn't matter what she does, an ex is always there. She thought it was okay but she realises she misses him. "I miss all of my exes They're the only ones that know me" - Self explanatory. She misses ALL of her ex's because they were the only people that knew her fully... her friends and family don't know her as much as her boyfriends have. She doesn't want one person to be close to her - she wants a number of people to be so she doesn't feel lonely. "And God knows that sex is A way to feel a bit, a little bit less lonely" - Sex makes her feel less lonely. Maybe she feels lonely in her current relationship because even though there is 'love' there isn't any 'lust', and there was passion/lust with her ex's that makes her feel wanted. Bascially, balance would make her happy, but it's either one or the other in her case. "Yeah, I tried to keep it covered up Yeah, I thought I cut him at the root But now I think my time is up 'Cause he keeps growing back" - I honestly think this might relate to cheating because of the line "God knows that the sex is, a way to feel a bit, a little bit less lonely" just before this. No one else knows about the sex but 'God'. It's another powerful song. I think a lot of couples go through this tragedy, they still have feelings for an ex so their current relationship - with someone they love and who loves them - suffers. |
