This song was an angry rebuttal from Blur after the huge britpop battle with Oasis. Albarn wasn't too keen on American culture, but Coxon was tired of the pop formula and got influenced by a lot of American lo-fi stuff. This nearly split the band up, and I think a lot of anger came together in this song and forged a new Blur. The album was self-titled, which is generally done on an artist debut record, so that could also be another symbolic gesture. This was a new Blur. A grown up sound. I also think the line "I got my head down when I was young, it's not my problem" is a reference to him being a student and learning music the proper way - something the Gallagher brothers would always use to abuse him "arthouse prick" etc Definitely a rebellious track, and something |

The lyrics posted here are complete tosh? Sort it out, man. This song is more than just a night out getting high. It's about moving on and doing something you believe in. Taking life a bit more seriously. For Mike Skinner it was obviously the album, Original Pirate Material. It is a beautiful song. One that can give you belief when you're down, and one that you can relate to when high. The groove and beat are infectious, and the references to stars, sea and cornfields give it a magical tint. Probably my favourite on the album. |

| Franz Ferdinand – The Dark of the Matinee Lyrics | 10 years ago |

For me this song is about an anxious, maybe socially awkward, lost soul who hates everything (maybe because he hates himself?). He fancies a girl at school (and even fantasises about her) When he finally meets her he offloads his hatred thinking they may share common ground, but then she counters all his negative thoughts with a positive outlook. She tells him to concentrate on the things he does like, and that's the way to fully enjoy life. Suddenly his mind is wondering, he's happy, he's successful, he's 'made it' (talking to Terry Wogan). The anxiety has gone, his confidence has grown, he's found his voice (My words and smile are so easy now). The chorus is about wanting to bunk off school and go to a matinee with said girl. I think this song is all about how a good woman can change a man's life. |
