In his podcast (The Jasta Show Episode #15 with Nick Newell, an MMA fighter who was born without a left hand), Jamey Jasta said that this song is about when he had a car crash with one of his friends. The friend died in that accident and Jamey lost his left thumb. |

I think these lyrics are about one of the rivers of the underworld according to greek mythology. There is this river called "Lethe" which erases all memory of your previous life, when you swim in it ("massive are the jaws of oblivion").
And the beginning of the song with "dogs on the run; foam on their mouths" could be a metaphor for the very same thing if you think about how waves with foam on top can look just like that... |
