A lamia is most often described as a demon. It could be something he summoned, or something he's sitting next to in Hell, or something sent to him to torment him. The Prodigal Son, the title, is based on the parable in the Bible, where a man's son wandered off, squandered his inheritance, and comes back promising to do better. The dad takes him back. The title basically means that the narrator strayed into evil, and he's trying to come back and be a good person. |

According to lyricist/drummer Neil Peart, there is no meaning at all in this song. When asked in the April/May 1980 Modern Drummer magazine about whether there is a message to this song, Peart said, "No. It was just a flash. I was working on an entirely different thing when I saw a cartoon picture of these trees carrying on like fools. I thought, 'What if trees acted like people?' So I saw it as a cartoon really, and wrote it that way. I think that's the image that it conjures up to a listener or a reader. A very simple statement." |
