I discovered this album during a long winter as an exchange student in Scandinavia after splitting up with my first girlfriend and it's resonated ever since. I think all the comments are valid, but on (one of many) repeat listenings I think the 'cardinal sin' maybe refers to an abortion that he encouraged his ex-partner to have and has been haunted by ever since. Trying to 'remain at large' perhaps indicates that he was a philanderer at the time but is now broken by regret. It's open to interpretation, though, which is perhaps why it's so easily adaptable to the listeners' own lives. One of many amazing Tom Waits songs. |
