Religious interpretations are definitely accurate, but I feel that all of Barnes' songs have to be viewed with a perspective that includes mental illness. Enemy Gene and Gronlandic Edic, especially. The Enemy Gene is the bipolar disorder from which he suffers. He literally has a gene that makes him an enemy to himself and those he loves. He can't trust his fractious heart because he knows the bipolar will make him betray everyone, repeatedly.
