Elliott Smith – King's Crossing Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is about the addiction beating the shit out of the body it inflicts. Its about the inner struggle you hold no chance against. The christmas line is especially disturbing. Only junkies will know the want and need that accompanies addiction. A child's excitement on christmas morning is fractionally as rewarding as a junkie's score.

Father John Misty – Holy Shit Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the first stanza refers directly to the name of the song "Holy Shit." The shitty things about all things holy- holy wars, old ideas, ...

The rest of the song seems to be about an increased dependence on technology and excessive consumerism- our new religion. ("Consumer slaves" "capital") The dependence on technology ("online Friends" "mobile lifestyle" "the golden era of tv") and excessive consumerism both lead to the loss of real human interaction ("isolation", "loveless sex" "free energy" while simultaneously destroying the earth. ("carbon footprint" "plant cancer" "fuck the mother in the green"

The line "instant streams" is interesting because it could be viewed as online video streaming and also referring to the earth. Streams and rivers generally take thousands of years to form and the idea of an instant stream goes along with the "free energy" line. We want everything now at the expense of nature's natural course.

The line "What's your paradise gotta do with Adam and Eve?" i take to mean what does your new religion (consumerism, technology) have to with the teachings of Christianity

The line Maybe love is just an economy based on resource scarcity, further blurs the line from what is considered sacred (love) with what americans now hold sacred (consumerism, capitalism.)

The "what's this gotta to do with you and me" seems to just sum up the glum outlook that FJM feels like he does not identify with either "religion"
