I think that this song is about how her childhood was so different from the people around her. Most people at age 16 are fighting for prom queen title or doing silly things that that where at 16 she was suicidal and dealing with harder things. She wishes she was a teen "idle" Dictionary.com defines "idle" as "without purpose or effect; pointless." She wishes that she had been a Teen Idle. Without any actual purpose. Those Teen Idles had been living their teen years without any actual real life problems. Without those problems their lives were fun, but idle, without purpose or effect on there future. She wishes her youth had been like everyone else's seems to have been. She wishes her biggest problem was maybe not winning prom queen instead of all the stuff she had been dealing with when she was 16. |

I think that this song is about a girl trapped in an abusive relationship. She loves him and is always there for him but he never "comes through" for her. As someone already said I think it's possible that maybe he associates ugliness with pain and because she is so beautiful he doesn't think he is actually hurting her in any permanent or serious way. Another theory I have is that maybe the word "pretty" doesn't necessarily mean that she looks beautiful it might mean that he just enjoys seeing her cry. Maybe to him her crying brings him joy. |
