Air – Once Upon A Time Lyrics 8 years ago
This song absolutely kills me. I think it is about how death is part of life, how time only ever moves us forward, bringing us closer to the end.

The experience of time changes, from when we are children and time goes slowly and has a magical and endless quality, to when you are older and time feels precious and short. But time ALWAYS marches forward, never backward. Whether it feels slow or fast, it is still bringing us closer to death.

"Time's getting old, time's over now...Don't try to run after time…time's over now" These all reflect the fact that time is NOT limitless; time will truly end one day for us all.

You may remember being a little boy or a little girl, “once upon a time”, but you can't travel backwards. Time passes…until it runs out. When time is TRULY over then you die. Thus the musical punctuation at the lyrics “time’s over now.”

As someone who is struggling with a family member's recent death, the lyrics are so poignant to me. You will always remember your youth, and that feeling of time being endless. You may yearn for this and hope to chase that time and that feeling, but eventually it will be far behind you.

I love this song intensely.

Arcade Fire – Porno Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the song is about Win and his wife. As their relationship deepens, they get to know each other’s true selves. Getting below the surface like that, seeing each other’s flaws, the relationship becomes deeply challenging. They fight, they struggle, and there is a risk they would break up.

But Win is in it for the long haul. He loves her so deeply, even knowing her true self, without the “makeup.” He will do whatever it takes. He doesn’t care if they fight. He won’t leave no matter how far she pushes him away. He cannot understand how her previous lovers did not feel the same way and see the soul and beauty he sees; he can only explain this by feeling that they were immature and only objectified women. Given only the slightest reason, they left her because they didn’t love her the way that he does. He can’t understand this.
Win has this deep and abiding love for his wife, but he bemoans the fact that society bases relationships on superficial objectification. His wife’s past has hurt and scarred her deeply. In his ideal world, people would feel the way that he and his wife do, as they know and experience something many others don’t (a great depth of love). Instead, the world is run by “little boys with their porno,” or immature men who don’t truly love, admire, or respect women as a group or individuals.

This superficial and wounding world threatens their relationship, leading him to wonder where they can go to be safe and stay whole as a couple. Sometimes feeling so deeply makes Win feel threatened, making him wonder “what is wrong with me.” In a way, he wishes that he too could be more superficial, because then he wouldn’t have the pain of loving so deeply.

All of the challenges and injuries of life, as well as the difficulties in their relationship make his wife question whether they will stay together. However, Win reiterates that he is not going anywhere, i.e. he’s “not over” the relationship. So in the end he decides the pain of loving deeply is worth it.

This may be my favorite love song of all time!!! It is truly a piece of artistry. It represents very much what marriage means to me. It is not easy, but it is about a deep commitment and love that others may not be able to appreciate or understand. Although the love hurts, it is worth it in the end.
