I may be totally off (this is my first-ever interpretation), but it sounds like it's about the death penalty. I think "that fucker" is murder, in this case, murder by the state, not just by a condemned inmate. "Did you find what you were looking for, or not at all?" could be how people execute inmates to seek closure, the sense of safety/deterrence, etc., but none of that is actually accomplished through executing inmates. I think he refers to humans as apes in this sense to really underscore how backwards it is to execute people, how it brings people down to a lower level when they murder each other, no matter who the murderer is. I definitely don't think it's about Bush/Iraq... I remember either Greg or Brett saying something about how they weren't going to write so many lyrics about Bush for this album. |
