@[alluringoptics:5479] I sincerely have to agree with you on this. I feel like it is talking about a girl who would rather be called a rebel or brat than be submissive. Or as Kurt Cobain put it "I'd rather be hated for who I am than liked for who I am not." The little girl at the beginning is definitely Kim. I think the little girl represents her because she feels like an alien because she is not submissive or that is how she feels her mother treat her. I think she put Kim Deal in this song because Kim is supposed to be playing her younger self. |

This song is definitely, without a doubt about Karen Carpenter from the Carpenters. There are so many easter eggs in their Sonic Youth's videos leading to their love of the Carpenters and especially Karen Carpenter. Dennis I don't know who Dennis was but he must have some significance. Elvis- died in 1977 Karen Carpenter died in 1968 the song was written in the 1990's Richard was her brother by the way. The song is mostly about how the pressure of fame and all the publicity to look hot all the time and how she was never allowed to play the drums ever because they wanted to get her out on stage eventually got to her. The stereotypes of how a woman "should" look led her to anorexia nervosa. Also in the video, Kim has a long green thread which gives the effect of throwing up. |
