guys, okay, the "brave new world" part really has to do with consumerism, but i think its more than that. the "my baby loves me" bits exist because she was always taught that, as a girl, her main goal was to be loved by the most people (and specially your boyfriend). throughout her life, she was always loved by someone, but it still felt empty. the way i see it, each stanza is about a phase in her life: it ends when she's an adult, because she dies - and thats why its in the past (bought, looked, was...). so, in the first stanza, shes talking about how she was a happy kid until she got a tv and got closer to the world, as in she started consuming information and the media kept telling her how to behave and how to look like. her life was like a picture of a sunny day because she always looked nice and happy to everyone, but they couldnt be there to know what really was inside her (the same way you can't be inside a picture, but its still something you admire). afterwards, its the teenage years: she's hungry because the pressures of society force her to be thin, and so she stops eating full meals and instead go for quick and unhealthy stuff like once a day, which is one symptom of an eating disorder. hungry makes her a modern girl because they're all thin and beautiful, and thats how she at least tries to attain that figure. the hole's the size of the entire world because she feel guilty about eating, and also she has no idea what the world is like, her model of it just being the town she grew up in. in the end, when she becomes an independent woman, she's angry because all of her efforts to be that perfect model of a female go to waste, when she finds out that it wont keep her from being sad and feeling unfulfilled. she has no money and she's sick and tired of all the things they told her to be, finding out that it was all bullshit. her life then fades away. |
