Ok, well i think this song is about a relationship with someone special who treated him like shit or did something devastating to him. The last part reinforces this. On the other hand, the chorus makes me very much think that this song is about religion. I think he may be saying that he sees that religion doesnt make sense or that belief in God is useless. When it says "From above, a rain of ashes descends" it sounds like he may be saying that Heaven is "burning". Then he mentions Anathema, which os a person who is looked down upon or condemned, especially by the Church. Then he says "From below, in my seclusion" saying he is maybe looked down upon, or maybe under heaven (not with God). The "in my seclusion" part could mean that he is alone where the majority believe in God or religion and he is alone, or secluded, with his beliefs. |

Ok, well after analyzing every part of this song, as well as the CD, I think that maybe, JUST MAYBE, I have an idea of what we're dealing with here... Now as we all know, Davey and Jade are both sXe (straight edge= abstaining from drinking, smoking, and drugs), and I think that this might be another of Havok's anti-drug songs. What first gave me this idea is that Girl is a common nickname for Cocaine. Grey can be used to represent many things. In the chorus it says "What follows me as the whitest lace of light just begs to be imbrued". Imbrued means stained or soaked, especially with blood. I think in this case Davey is using it to mean dephiled or ruined. Maybe Davey is referring to someone who has a great mind (whitest lace of light) but they choose to screw it up with drugs (just begs to be imbrued). When it says "what follows will swallow whole", he could be saying that the drugs (what follows) are taking over this persons life (will swallow whole) With the "i lay me down tonight parts" could possibly be using Davey himself as an example, as if he were the persson doing this to himself. Lastly, if you have seen the video, you might have noticed that it has an "Alice in Wonderland" type theme. (A girl sees a rabbit and follows it into another world, see becomes plastic-like). "Alice in Wonderland" is a story based almst entirely on drugs. On a final note, I would like to add that it is very likely that this song, as well as all of Davey's songs, doesn't have one specific meaning. It could be a combination of random ideas he had that flowed together. Or it could have no meaning at all. It's not necessarilly good to pick apart words and stuff, especially Davey's. Sometimes you just need to get meaning from the mood or sound that is created by the genious and talent that is AFI. |
