This song is clearly about revolution, like everyone says. However, I was listening and thought to myself the title could refer to domestic violence (which is often said to be behind closed doors, because victims don't usually talk about it). Listening strengten my hypothesis. I think this song is about a mother and her children suffering from an abusive father but, like many victims, don't do anything about it. One day, they finally decide to act. "Chairs thrown and tables toppled, Hands armed with broken bottles," Signs of violence and abuse. "Standing no chance to win but, We're not runnin', we're not runnin'." The victims know they will suffer, but don't do anything about it. "There's a point I think we're missin', It's in the air we raise our fists in, In the smiles we cast each other, My sister, my brother. About the time we gave up hope and We never find these locks still open, Stumbling on stones unturned, The hurt we feel, we all have found." I might be splitting hairs here, but it seems the victims have decided to do something. "The lines we've crossed in search of change, but all they see is treason" The abuser will see the denunciation as a treason. "Although we have no obligation, to stay alive On broken backs we beg for mercy, we will survive" The abuser hasn't managed to break them yet, the victims keep hope of a brighter day. "(Break out) I won't be left here Behind closed doors." The victims don't want to keep the secret of their abuse anymore. "Bonfires burn like beacons, Guiding the lost and weakened. Flames dance on crashing waves, Guiding ships who've gone a stray" This metaphor could imply the victims are the lost, weakened and stray ships. Social aid programs and the police, for example, are the beacons. They give hope. "Time out, let's stop and think this through, We've all got better things to do, A talk in circles run in place, Answers inches from my face." The victims have decided to stop talking about change and to act. "Black eyes, broken fingers, Blood drips and I let it run down my lips and to my swollen gums When hope is non-existent, Our instincts all scream, "Run", We never turn our backs or even bite our tongue." Yet, they still don't do anything in the end because they are afraid. |

This song reminds me of America (my favorite song from Night Visions). I think it's about a revolution (perhaps the American Revolution), and the song is one revolutionary talking to another like a mentor: "As a child you would wait And watch from far away. But you always knew that you'd be the one That work while they all play." That last line for me means that the people seemed to ignore what was going on, and just went with it. The revolutionaries would have to change things (That work while they all play) It could also be an allusion to the fact that the British exploited the Americans to pay off their war debt. "In youth you'd lay Awake at night and scheme Of all the things that you would change, But it was just a dream!" Pretty straightforward. The revolutionaries wished for change individually but, without assembling, it seemed as a dream. The dream could also be their goal. "Here we are, don't turn away now, We are the warriors that built this town. Here we are, don't turn away now, We are the warriors that built this town From dust." Awesome chorus. It just says to keep hope and faith in what you do. (If we continue in the American revolution subject, the town could be a metaphor for the US) "The time will come When you'll have to rise Above the best and prove yourself, Your spirit never dies!" Farewell, I've gone to take my throne above, But don't weep for me 'Cause this will be The labor of my love" The mentor has died, perhaps from fighting the revolution. He prays that the other revolutionary will take his place, continue the fight and be courageous. |
