was listening to this in the car a week ago and I hear "I hope I live to see the day the Pope gets high" and all the years of hearing the song and only now I realise what he's saying.
I lost it. Absolutely fucking lost it. Hardest I've laughed in a year. |

@[Zeke7:18410] You're missing the point. It's truly tongue in cheek, which is given away at the point Ben uses the word "fuck" as a noun.
Anyway, what he's making fun of is the superior, holier-than-thou attitude people of ANY class, regardless of wealth, background etc. Well, perhaps exclusive to America.
I can't think of an occasion where he's ever acted superior, and this is no exception.
It is his one political song, so he's got to shame something, which is, in this case, the particular attitude of people presented in the lyrics.
Even the song "Songs of Love" was written by someone else, and that is probably by far the most pretentious song under his name.
Have a little faith in his words. He won't let you down. |

The song discusses the sorrow we feel knowing we are born into the world alone, we live alone, and die alone. And it discusses how we distract ourselves from our own existence. |

I'd always thought it described the feeling of time moving around and past people, as if people feel as if they are a standstill point in a chaotic world. And that the illusion is broken when they look in a mirror and it all comes rushing back; time hasn't stopped moving, and will continue to do so. |

@[alecdanger:1796] most songs are about drug use if you look at them in that way... But I like to think not this one. |
