I recently discussed this song with my Gr. 10 English Language Arts class. It is actually published in the "Home Grown" Newfoundland curriculum, which is a supplement to the Nelson Literacy 10 textbook. My students generated some great thematic statements for what we agreed was a "coming of age" song. One statement (which I now paraphrase from my faltering memory) was "Breaking the bonds of youth can be frightening, but worth it." (Thanks Erika) We discussed how societal bonds or strings are cut, only to be replaced by self-imposed restraint of often shutting ones mouth and not saying anything. Regardless, the song remains quite life affirming. As we also noted, the speaker goes from a group (we) imagining their bodies hovering above the land in the first verse, to an individual (I) actually hovering in the final verse. And their can be no doubt about the thrills life holds in store, when you can embrace being lost, and "loving the view." |
