Belle & Sebastian – The Life Pursuit Lyrics 7 years ago
This is such a great belle and Sebastian song. The ‘He’ is the Christian God. The song taps into the Christian concept of magnification; it’s the idea that although God is infinant, He can seem obscured and small in this life. One of the jobs of the Christian is to magnify God like a telescope magnifies an image of a distant galaxy and makes it begin to appear as Big as it really is. So Stuart is singing this song to a lady who is having a rough trot in life and saying that if you look to Jesus, you might find that he offers what appears to be a tiny bit of hope. If you keep looking you will find that life is really part of an eternal reality and Jesus is both the focus of that reality and the key to that reality. If you’re not a Christian it will look like folly but once you’re in, you’ll never want to look back.

Belle & Sebastian – Nobody's Empire Lyrics 8 years ago
This one is easy for the Belle and Sebastian fan...

Stuart Murdoch is a Christian and this autobiographical song has many references and his Christian faith. The ‘site unseen pulling strings’ is a reference to God and His plan for Stuart’s life. Jesus said that his burden is easy and his yoke is light. The line about being ‘tied to the yoke of a decent bloke who was stern but never daunting’ is a very clear reference to Jesus. Stuart Murdoch claims to have been cured from chronic fatigue syndrome after a faith healing experience and the afore mentioned reference is confirmed that Jesus ‘told him to push (the yoke) and made me (Stuart) feel well..’ in the next line.

Apart from being a Christian, I am also a lefty like Stuart and I love the lines about ‘Marching with the crowd singing dirty and loud for the peoples’ emancipation’. The system is broken, friends, we have to fix it.

David Bowie – Sound and Vision Lyrics 10 years ago
It's about TV. Maybe TV is being used as a metaphor for something else but the lyrics refer to TV.

The basic operational colour of a TV is 'electric blue'. When you watch TV in the day you need to draw your blinds so as to avoid glare. And even though one may sit in 'solitude', the analog signals of television drift into the room 'over' your 'head. It's quite a 'wonder' how this amazing 'gift' works.
