I think it's about her not knowing her lover's whereabouts and making things up to numb herself. She's going to end up being the stranger but she feels her love for him is stronger than anyone else who he would meet in his travels. (Maybe he's on tour? Or business travels?) Her love is superior to theirs. ("Nobody deserves you the way that I do.") She does what she can to get by and pull through it ("all that bad shit") but knows she will have to end it soon. I feel like by the end of the song, she realizes her love is "average" and not special at all. That it will never be enough to hold up the relstionship. |

I think this song is really just about the start of an end. Pretty simple. I view it more as a relationship ending but it can really be anything. It's just something she remembers and misses. Like that happy feeling you get in the beginning of a new romance, that at some point disappears on one person's end. But they both can feel it. She doesn't want it to end but can sense the end is coming. Like a weird premonition. This is how endings start. Ending starts. I like to flip the words there too because it makes you think of it differently. The end is starting. It's such an awful feeling. "All this that is more than a wish is a memory" says not only does she wish for it, but it actually happened. And she wants it back. "All this that is ceases to be." And then "the obvious door opens nothing" means she knows what she has to do (forget him, leave) but there will be nothing there for her. |
