@[Opethfan19m:3182] I think I agree with this evaluation, I do think it is definitely up for personal interpretation. Morningrise seemed to be more focused on instrumentals than on vocals, although it does definitely have some good lyrical writing. |

Well, it seems like a bunch of dudes want to resurrect a god, end up activating some ancient dark curses and then a giant sea monster kills everyone. Good song. |

There are more specific versions, but I'm gonna say that it could refer to the loss of something in general. I mean, I can relate to the general idea of it in just how I feel about my life. It's really all subjective. |

@[bvillans:2320] You can do a more objective line-for-line or stanza-for-stanza analysis of a piece, but for me I always just kind of have to read or write down the whole thing and listen to it a bunch of times to really find my own meaning. Because yeah songs generally have a particular universal meaning, but what a piece means to me is generally very personal and arcane. I think it's all subjective. |

Damn, when that harmonized lead comes in, if you don't get some chills you are listening to the song incorrectly. |

Opeth is definitely based in technical progressive death metal, but they do experiment with and are influenced by several other sub-genres of metal, rock, folk, etc. |

Yeah, I think it is that after the attempted murder in "Demon of the Fall", in this song he is basically realizing that his perception was being obscured by rage and confusion and that basically he really overreacted. |

@[steel07:2036] I agree with you that Rush may very well have the best song lyrics ever. Like, I like a lot of heavy metal, some of which has amazing lyrical writing, but Rush.... their incorporation of allegory and fantasy, while still basically referring to more objective, real-life situations, but not blatantly....like, idk it's just super awesome.
I've never actually heard of Coheed and Cambria, but I feel I have to agree with moarwade in that you shouldn't really trash artists without good reason. I mean, yeah, if it's like One Direction or Beiber than yeah go the fuck ahead but if it's just another rock artist, they may not be rock gods like Rush but that doesn't mean they're not any good. |

Since this is their oldest stuff I would probably say that Åkerfeldt hadn't really developed his death metal voice as much so the vocals are a little obnoxious...but God, the music in this song is amazing. That guitar melody...I feel like I'm in an epic battle or something. |

@[Tindalos:1895] I love that concept of total isolation, and I can relate to my own allegorical meaning of this song. Musically my favorite part of the song is that long vocal harmony near the beginning. I have to say I probably like April Ethereal a bit more though. |

@[6th_sadistic_sniper:1894] I agree that it's good to go through the album and look up the story and lyrics and intently listen, but I always thought of the songs as allegorical (especially April Ethereal, that's probably my favorite) so even before I knew the story I had gotten my own meaning out of that song. Idk really just whatever you're into. |

@[6th_sadistic_sniper:1892] I really think that the songs and overall story of this album can be somewhat allegorical, in my mind anyway, and can be compared to real life situations. Like something you come to love and build your life around suddenly rips itself away from you (April Ethereal), sometimes relationships just don't work for certain reasons (The Amen Corner) and you've really just got to accept that because trying to force "love" can really be kind of destructive (Demon of the Fall). |

@[NUMBER:1882] 4 Yes, definitely. I think one other thing that I got out of this song was kind of the same ideas that are being expressed in a lot of recent TED talks and such, about how new school systems and too much group collaboration in schools are kind of destroying kids' independent minds. |

@[deathhound7:1755] I haven't had much experience with romance myself so I have to agree with you when it comes to heavy metal lyrics. With the genre of heavy metal, you can go so much deeper than the generic topic of "love" in pop music. There are entire categories of metal dealing with mythology, satanics, the supernatural, ghosts and so much of it is just based on death. I do like this music that Disturbed does, and I know a lot of metal bands do this, where they take a situation that is considered normal among people and write a heavy metal song with very dark and cryptic lyrics that refer to it. I also just think that their singer is really good. |

| Opeth – Blackwater Park Lyrics

@[Disposition_987:1704] I was thinking, really, if you take that riff that the first stanza of lyrics are being played over and make it less heavy, it would almost sound like something from a classic prog rock band would play, like Led-Zeppelin or maybe an older Rush song. Idk I just thought that when I first started listening to the song.
My favorite part, I think, of this whole song is at the end, when you hear the last death metal vocals (The sun sets forever over Blackwater Park!!!) and then the guitar and bass play that ending-thing for several bars before it goes acoustic. It's not even that complicated of a part but in my mind it's still some awesome ass prog rock. Although the acoustic guitar at the end definitely finishes the idea of the song well and creates a very cool effect, I can kind of imagine the song just ending when the electric guitar part ends, with a slight fall or something and then the guy smashing his guitar and everything just going up in flames....... |

Last year I decided I wanted to get into heavy metal, so I went to my dad, because I'm pretty sure he knows everything about heavy metal. Anyway, he recommended the Opeth album "Watershed" and I started listening to it. On that album there aren't much death vocals, but when I did hear them I didn't necessarily hate them, but they were a little weird for me. I liked the overall sound of the album though, so I asked for more recommendations, and one of them was the album "Blackwater Park". I was getting more into the death vocals at this point.
Anyway, The Drapery Falls was my favorite song on this album for quite a while. I think it suggests many different emotions, with the distant vocals at the beginning (I don't know exactly what that's called, but I call it "radio singing", when the voices sound like they're coming through some sort of radio or microphone) and the harmonies at the end and the raging death vocals in the middle.
I've actually gotten more into this stuff since then, currently my favorite Opeth song to listen to is "April Ethereal", which is almost entirely death vocals but they are done well, they're expressing very deep anger. Also the guitar is amazing. But it is definitely musical art and requires a great amount of musical skill. I won't say that they're aren't death metal bands that just senselessly beat things and scream profanity, but people who do that give amazing artists like this a bad name. |
