On the Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House album she introduces this song as a "reminder to be mindful". She is exploring what happens when we run tape loops in our heads and miss the beautiful things going on around us. She's clearly tired of being this way, but also understands that change will be slow. She's made a commitment to learning to be kinder to herself. So in a way this IS a classic love song about love and a break-up: she's letting go of a dysfunctional relationship with her comfortable, old self so she can move on to a new and better relationship with someone new—the new self she's still unsure of. |
