@[scumbagstyle:25751] You totally nailed who Zevon was that made him so endearing and refreshing and ironically so epically unmarketable to the masses. What made Zevon so great wasn’t merely what he embodied, but probably more so what he refused to embody in an industry where to shun the system and its keepers is to learn to accept less credit and financial backing as punishment. Brilliantly worded transcription of the man on your part and you captured what made him the antithesis of all those plastic personas parading down the Hollywood walk of fame or prostituting themselves out to Pepsi in exchange for some corporate promo. His greatness was his unique refusal to play by anyone else’s rules, whether it was the record company’s wishes or even his own doctor’s orders. I’m sure by the time he was 25 or 30 he was already at total peace knowing he’d be flaming out at 55 or 60 and having a helluva lot of fun on his way down his path. |

I personally am of a different opinion about this song. I don’t feel that the relationship is at rock bottom at all, I feel that this couple in the song has collectively faced some kind of tragic unforeseen circumstance and have been brow beaten by life, and the tone of the song is quite different than the lyrics might suggest if they were read absent the cords. I feel that there’s an overwhelming sense of “F it, life may suck at the moment for us both honey, but we’re about to make a serious comeback!” And you can sense that this man is going to make sure this sinking ship is fully righted. Their relationship is strong, they’re just victims of life. Of hardship and adversity. But they’re on their way back. |
