I think there's more to the steeple reference than people realize. On here, people have been saying it's about materialism and Christianity. Both are right, but it's more than that. Of course there have always been competitions between churches, who could build the biggest steeple, thereby showing who has the most money. So there, it shows the hypocrisy of the church and the materialism. Materialism in general by saying my house/car/whatever is bigger than yours. Of course a steeple is also a classic phallic symbol and I think MM is using it as such how men always want to prove they're more of a man than the next. I think the deepest meaning, and it's consistent with the rest of the song, is our society's tendency to deify things like money, capitalism, and possession. |
