Electric Light Orchestra – Fire on High Lyrics 10 years ago
The song has reversible dialogue, which you hear in the beginning as a warped voice (actually Jeff Lynne, doing a lot with reversible sound clips, something he has fun with during a lot of his songs). This is no different. E.L.O. was considered by some religious groups to be a satanic band. Jeff, in kind, had fun with Fire on High, which made fun of that phenomenon that had been perpetuated by people assuming they found references to Satan in songs like "Stairway to Heaven".

Jeff, with a sense of humor, says these words when played in reverse:
"The music is reversible/ But Time is not/
Turn Back, Turn Back, Turn Back, Turn Back..."

He's obviously making fun of those who wasted their time playing this backward expecting to find something more malevolent. I think it is brilliant, and the song is absolutely fantastic.

Queen – Seaside Rendezvous Lyrics 10 years ago
I almost get a feeling that this song was meant to come off of the very nasty, very negative "Death on Two Legs" and all the bitterness Freddie and the band had towards their former producer, then segue into this song so as not to seem so angry, and honestly, It really works.

Admittedly, the song after Death on Two Legs is "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon", but this song still helps to make everything feel better, now that the band was free, they can look forward to happier times, so why not take in a 'Seaside Rendezvous'? Brilliant!

Stephin Merritt – Forever And A Day Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is about loving someone absolutely and unconditionally, except the singer is absolutely grounded, as in they don't seem to treat love as some panacea, but as a need, a want and a desire to have this one person in their lives.

The promises of every color of the rainbow sounds a touch sketchy, but the singer even approaches this with a realistic point of view, "just because others say it can't be done doesn't mean I won't try".

Any more explanation? Look at the Latin Phrase "Sine Qua Non". It literally translates to, "without which not", or to put more mildly, "essential; nothing without". The singer tells their lover that they are their "Sine Qua Non", which in context translates to, "You are my essence; you are essential; I need you".

Stephin Merritt is a wonderful songwriter, and the craft of a wonderful pop song is one that is scarcely recognized as vital, here is a song written by someone who cares about writing a great song, and a love song at that? Simply magnificent.
