| Red Hot Chili Peppers – Scar Tissue Lyrics

I think this song is different aspects of his own nature singing to himself- through a context of either the subconscious mind or a "higher self" trying to talk to him. "Sarcastic Mr. Know it all" is a metaphor for his rational/conscious mind trying to avoid dealing with his problems; problems pertaining to mean the things that make him and explain why he functions a certain way. However the other voice; the subconscious or higher self one- the one that holds the higher position is trying to teach him to not engage in avoidance but rather embrace his being. The "scar tissue that I wish you saw" is his higher self communicating to him that he is scarred or that he has been scarred and that he needs to understand this before comprehending himself. Meanwhile he is trying to fight this voice of reason "push me up against the wall" but the higher self is only ever understanding and still shows a level of unadorned compassion, "close your eyes and I'll kiss you" representing even in your weakest and or less accepting moment I still care. |

I think it's definitely a coming of age type song with respect to understanding how someone fits in the world. The structure of the song breaks the fourth wall and tries to communicate directly with the audience and that is important as I feel that the purpose of this song was to evoke empathy in the audience. The "ode" is to forgive her family in the sense that they did what was expected of parents, even tho the artist feels that this effort was misguided. "We were raised to see life as fun and take it if we can", that is a generalised statement, a lie told to everyone when they're young, that they can go after whatever they want. However parents are protective and restrictive and try to direct a child's life and this action can be harmful. The song is a reflection, so the assumption is that an understanding has been reached. That understanding is "nobody cares", in that people will say live your life and then judge you for doing exactly that. "What I’ve become…wasn’t my design" is another way of saying you (family) created this by setting me up to fall. Giving the wrong type of help and information "hold me…when I was out there" is trying to deny me from the world, rather than educate me about it, so that now each new discovery I make to educate myself is a wrong step in your eyes. Meanwhile all of life's other commentators (“people everywhere think something better than I am”) judge too; thinking they would do better in your shoes. Trouble is they weren’t on this road of self-discovery so that while you were "out there" finding yourself and liking it, people were trying to stop it. The song is more self-empowering than it is sad. To surmise it could be written as "fuck the haters", but that's not as succinct is it? haha. |

I think this song is about a bride's introspective view of her wedding day and the feelings she experiences just prior to walking down the aisle. At the very least you could apply this concept to the lyrics or understand it to be used as a metaphor |
