Ween – She Wanted to Leave Lyrics 8 years ago
Jesus, what an album ender. I listened to Ween and then Richard Thompson and then back to this Ween song. Holy Christ this is hilarious and it's ridiculous because it stands alone about as well as anything written by the actual Richard Thompson (closest to Bees Wing I guess), even when they've morphed Richard into a pirate. It's sad, hilarious, absurd, touches on heartbreak and lose of innocence and sounds glorious. Ween work on a level that I've never seen anything else even approach. Crazy.

Mark Kozelek & Desertshore – Mariette Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is obviously about a relationship where the two people want different things. Mark is completely content with the status quo while "Mariette" wants more. Mark seems to be ignoring this pretty major problem and completely living in the moment. This relationship isn't going to work, but it isn't going to ruin his day, at least not yet. The relaxed music and the slow fade at the end perfectly reflect Mark's own mood.

Mark Kozelek & Desertshore – Hey You Bastard I'm Still Here Lyrics 10 years ago
Mark references states that he was first introduced to Anton during his youth in Ohio. His only exposure to the Satanic Bible was because he was "bored" and he got it at what is probably a drab mall and likely read it in his room at his parents house. Fast forward and Mark is in California and is not only meeting the author, a ridiculous and intriguing person, but has so much going on that he can't even make it to Anton's party, which he is nonchalant about. This is quite the contrast and demonstrates why he chose to move from Ohio to California, which is detailed more explicitly at the end of the song.

The movie Papillon is a metaphor for Mark's own life and shows that he dreamed of something more from a young age. Papillon tells the story of one man encountering adventure after he escapes from prison. Mark is leaving the "prison" of Ohio for something more stimulating - like going to parties with the guy that wrote the Satanic Bible.

As someone who grew up in a smallish town and had a copy of the Satanic Bible, I find this song easy to relate to. A book so outlandish and provocative held a lot of appeal to a teenager living with his parents in a boring town.

The Cure – Prayers for Rain Lyrics 10 years ago
However you specifically interpret this song, it is obviously about an untenable situation, be it a relationship that has ended or is still ongoing but broken. Relief is needed to free the author from this pain and heartache, but it is not going to be immediate or the author wouldn't have to pray for it.

The Cure – Closedown Lyrics 10 years ago
As others said, this is about becoming emotionally closed off from love, but wanting to be open and to feel again. Based on the rest of the album I'd say it is about someone in a relationship becoming closed off to their partner and being too self-involved to truly allow for love: love is selfless. This is a devastating song because all of the wanting in the world can't reverse the situation. You can't consciously turn love "on." Heartbreaking.

As with Plainsong the music perfectly complements the lyrics, which are sparse. Amazing song.

One of my favourite endings to a song. Love it. Go fishing...
