what I personally got from the song was that on the 5th of may (cinco de mayo) a man, preferably their father, was killed by someone, hence the pillowcase on his head. the ambulance calling out his name could mean he was dead or the sirens could not be responded to because of his death or the people in the ambulance couldn't find him. The chorus could be about memories they had with their father and being on spirit lake could be to do with the fact he is dead and that is why it is just them on a boat with him and lemonade. the second part could be the lies the parents faced which was hidden behind such beauty and grace that they never realised the true nature of them both. the third part could be about the 7 children could have watched someone shoot the father and that is what "We seven kids We almost died Nearly put to death By lightening strikes Instead there was hot, pink Flashes in the sky" was all about. and then when they say about climbing the rocks in snow and rain could be metaphorical and to do with trying to escape to safety to try and recover from the trauma. they go to their mother to to break the terrible news to her and heal her pain with their love. I do not believe the video has much to do with the actual song itself but there could have been hints to highlight some lyrics. |
