Air Supply – Making Love Out Of Nothing At All Lyrics 3 years ago
Love this song so much, but I think people misunderstand that Steinman's lyrics were often meant to be grouped together, not as individual lines.

The singer here is a man who has all this potential and all these capabilities, but it's all on the surface. He recognizes he is a very superficial person. Meanwhile, this woman who has won his heart has a power he does not, the ability to reach past all of that superficial stuff and create real emotions within him.

She is making love out of nothing at all - and he is the nothing she is creating it from.

Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight Lyrics 6 years ago
Taken into the divorce context, it's probably his fantasy of confronting his wife's lover. The lyrics fit that scenario.

Okay, seriously, the song is about the demagogue who uses charisma and a well-timed word to rouse the rabble and send them to do his bidding, then sits back and holds himself out as blameless, since all he did was "talk".

This behavior, and this character, is everywhere now. It's Rush on talk radio, sick in his ditto heads on the liberal elite. It's the Bannon using Breitbart to stir the racists up against anyone who isn't them. It'd the tea party, so mad they can't even figure who they are mad at anymore. It's Trump and all of these against Muslims and immigrants.

It's everywhere, and nobody is holding these instigators accountable while they destroy every civil and social norm in pursuit of personal wealth, power and influence.

Trump. A very prescient song.

Jennifer Lawrence – Hanging Tree Lyrics 11 years ago
The song is from the prospective of the dead man in the tree. He "bade his love to run, so we'd both be free", but obviously he did not make it.

Interestingly, the song is clear that three men were murdered, but it is not clear by whom they were killed. The implication of the song is either a) they both are murderers, now his ghost longs for her to join him in death, or b) the dead man was not the killer - his "love" was, and his ghost now hungers for vengeance.

This song inherits a tradition of dark, haunting, even sinister folk music and art from a similar vein down through the centuries.
