For me this is about getting over a seemingly perfect relationship that went completely wrong, and for once, the protagonist isn't really at fault. She wrecks it, and he's left to pick up the pieces. "You mock the good things, you play the hearts strings, play them one by one" A constant negativity eventually crawls out of the woodwork, and normally, such a trait would have chased him off at the beginning, but it's too late; he's in love and she will win him over every time. "It's perfect as it stands, so why then crush it in your perfect hands" Vintage McAloon right here: everything was going so well, why are you messing this up? Could it be jealousy? Control issues? Insecurities? Neglectful? Just mean spirited at the core? Who knows. This track, along with the rest of Steve McQueen/Two Wheels Good is a finely woven tapestry of pathos and broken-hearted lamentation. Outstanding record. |
