I always thought this was about Tanya's relationship with her sister Kirstin Hersh and Kirstin's struggles with mental illness. The lyrics remind me of Delicate Cutters by Throwing Muses which is about the same thing from Kirstin's perspective (Throwing Muses was created by Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly btw) |

I do think it's initially about two boys fighting, but I also think it touches on other things like: bullying, violence as a rite of passage into manhood, the toxic idea of having to be the "stronger man" by kicking someones ass, and the culture of violence that happens in the streets- like the Jerry Springer-level tempers and reactions that spin out of control, and the deaths of so many young people from stupid acts of violence against each other... like that hint of sirens towards the end of the song right before "Somebody's baby boy ain't coming home tonight, One wrong move and it'll be too late, Mama won't be making no birthday cake" |

| Coil – Heartworms Lyrics

This song could possibly be about a spiritual possession, but I think it's a bit more than just that. "There's too much blood in my alcohol" sounds like one of those stupid slogan t-shirts mocking alcoholism. I think the rest of the lyrics are about being ignorant and superstitious and a miserable toxic person that's trying to drink yourself to death. "feeding the heartworms" is feeding the hate in your heart.
I have no idea about that last line, anyone have a guess? |

| Coil – Amber Rain Lyrics

The subject of this song is cutting yourself, or possibly suicide. "Amber rain" refers to the dripping of blood. Considering it's an amber color, maybe the blood drops are watered down like in a shower or while rinsing off the cuts. "caught between the weak and the strong" is about the struggle to not hurt yourself, versus the obsessive need to do so. "where deeper darker waters wait for me" this could mean either death, or that darker place where you lose control and cut too deeply. "I don't expect I'll ever understand how life just trickled through my hand" The incessant ritual makes as much sense to the cutter as it does to everyone else, which means it makes no sense at all. |

| Coil – Fire of the Mind Lyrics

Coil songs are so intense. I don't really think you can find an exact 'meaning' to their lyrics, but here's my interpretation:
This song's main theme is the inescapable cycle of death. The title "fire of the mind" represents that fiery madness of too many thoughts shooting through your mind at once, and when your thoughts are too large for your mind to comprehend, it feels like a fire sweeping through your cortex. like madness ie. a fire of the mind.
"Does death come alone or with eager reinforcements?" I love that line. So he's questioning death, and what is death really? Does death bring new life or enlightenment with it? Do we simply cease to exist, or do we transcend? What does death bring to us when we greet it?
"Angels are mathematical... angels are bestial... man is the animal" it means that we are the same as angels, or higher beings. We are simultaneously our baser, more primal mammal selves, and also something much greater than our material forms, something sacred AND profane.
"Flashes from the axis" the axis, as in a wheel, as in the wheel of life. Also called bhavacakra, from buddhism. There's too much to go into about that, but in summary it's basically a diagram (supposedly drawn by buddha himself) showing us the cycle of life and the other realms of existence.
"On the hummingway to the stars" I think of a hummingway as a sort-of portmanteau, meaning the electronic hum of a highway. "to the stars" has an obvious meaning.
"Holy, holy" the chanting reminds me of catholic hymns
"The blacker the sun... the darker the dawn" makes me think of how one day our sun will burn out, and all life will cease to exist. |
