I think this song is like a.....monologue. I'd like to think Morrissey is trying to reflect one of his introspections in this song. 'Mother, I can feel, the soil falling over my head; the sea wants to take me, the knife wants to slit me, do you think you can help me?' Perhaps the narrator is trying to seek detached comfort from his mother. According to Morrissey's autobiography, he shared a very close relationship with his mum, that could explain why. The last bits, 'It's so easy to laugh.......' could be a dialogue directed toward the listener, perhaps something to remind us that feeling pain can often make us sour and bitter (individuals). 'It is so easy to be callous, it requires character and courage to care'. I wish this community the best. |
